Polygonal or wavy rifling has fewer waves than conventional (ground-and-grooves) rifling. This allows the least amount of gas to escape around the bullet leaving the barrel. It also creates a larger bearing surface that increases speed and accuracy. This is extremely important when shooting through windows/doors or other hard surfaces.
